Oldest child has IQ advantage!

Ok, I always knew that, but now I could confirm that.

A study conducted in Norway with 250.000 men says that first child has about 2.3 points higher IQ.

The reasons could be many, but seems to be a social not a biological situation:

"Older siblings might have a higher IQ because they act as surrogate parents from time to time, tutoring their younger siblings in certain situations."

"Another possible explanation is that parents have more time and resources to invest in their firstborn child. As a result of this, the eldest child usually has the most one-on-one time with its parents, and receives greater exposure to their sophisticated vocabulary."

So, tell me? Are you the first one? Are you smartest?

I always want to print my pictures as posters or canvas. Wallhogs brought to me this opportunity with more features than I was expecting.

I can print my pictures and paintings using reusable vinyl. They can be applied to a wall and if don't like the result, you can move it. You can remove it and store it to place it elsewhere in the future. And don't worry, it will not damage the wall surface when removed.

Also, they offer the opportunity to earn some money with my pictures. They have partnership with photographers: you can upload your pictures to Wallhogs Catalog and when your work gets sold, you get paid. Well, I'll love to know that a photo I've taken is on someone's walls.

And, of course, I'll start with my own house. My living room has no life, no colours... What do you think about this picture for a canvas?

They also do special handling and cutting with the picture. For example, I can ask them to cut out the flower from the sky background.

Well, use your imagination, you can decorating your kids rooms, offices, personalize your business , anywhere there is a wall, with your own art.

Oh... you don't have your own photos or graphics? This is not a problem. They have a catalogue with pictures for your to choose.

Print big - Your idea printed in the size of your imagination.

When Andre was a little baby and I was returning to work, I had a hard time with breastfeed, milk collection, and storage.

I did it for 2 months and gave up because I couldn't find a comfortable pump that met my needs.

Now I found this website, with several types of pumps. I speccially like Ameda Breast Pump,
small, lightweight pump designed to meet the needs of breastfeeding mothers that return to work.
I hope it could help you.

Recently, I was talking about Tracking Our Teen Drivers, pros and cons, and a how hard is for parents find a balance when the subject is child safety. And here is another example:

SnoopStick is a USB flash drive type device that allows you to monitor what your kids is doing while on the Internet. And, you can monitor them live, in real time, from anywhere in the world.

Simply plug the SnoopStick into the computer you want to monitor. Then run the setup program to install the SnoopStick monitoring components on the computer. The whole process takes less than 60 seconds.

Any time you want to see what web sites your kids are visiting, who they are chatting with, and what they are chatting about, simply plug in your SnoopStick to any Windows based computer with an Internet connection and a USB port.

You can monitor both sides of IM conversations in real time or tell SnoopStick to display recent activity.

You can check the sender and recipient of every email sent or received.

So, why do we need to educate and teach our children if we can control them?

Blog EntryTracking Your Teen DriversFeb 25, '07 4:29 PM
for everyone
Lots of parents want to know where their teenagers are at any given time. Now they can. New gadgets can let parents know every time their children drive too fast or go somewhere they shouldn't.

Parents can receive immediate input to counsel their teens on safe driving habits and hopefully avoid tragic accidents. Or, maybe, they will be able to locate missing children without time delays.

But, parents need to consider some points first. Yes, teenage drivers are at a higher risk for being in a car crash.

Here are some the main reasons:
  1. Lack of driving experience
  2. A tendency to take risks while driving
  3. Feeling of invincibility

These 3 things combined are a deadly combination.

How a GPS tracking system could help parents:
  • Know where your teens are at all times.
  • Keep an eye on your teens driving habits.
  • Peace of mind for you.
  • Most importantly, the safety of your child.

We have to admit that sometimes teen tracking is the only solution.

But, keeping track of what teenagers are up to without being too intrusive can be a challenge for parents.

Showing love and concern and giving teenagers choices rather than controlling what they do and knowing every detail of their movements is most important. The right way for a parent to be aware of what their teen is doing is to start taking an interest in their social lives before they’re old enough to drive. In my opinion, technology is no replacement for good communication.

And you? What do you think? Should we use tracking devices?

Blog EntryJacksonville townhouses near A schoolsFeb 15, '07 3:36 PM

St. Johns County, located just south of Jacksonville in Northeast Florida, is one of the highest-income counties in the United States. With beautiful beaches, lush nature preserves, historical attractions, and large estate homes, fantastic public school system, St. Johns County real estate is hotter than ever.

Developers are building some of the most popular neighborhoods in North East Florida like Palencia and Nocatee. Homes for sale in St Johns County are bringing in buyers from all across the country.

So, that's the tip for those who live in Florida: search for Jacksonville townhouses near A schools in St Johns County. To help you, you could go to the page map and choose a County to view the locations of the schools on a Google Map. You can see the schools grade by color code.

One of the main reason why St Johns County homes are so popular is the public school system. With one of the best public school systems in the state, its easy to understand why parents are buying homes in St Johns County for the schools. Also in St Johns County is a wonderful college, Flagler College, one of “America’s Best College Buys” and one of the Princeton Review’s “Best 357 Colleges,” it is located in St. Augustine, adding an academic feel to the city.

At first glance, the R.C. Color Bug seems like a great idea and a fun product for young kids. Plug a marker into the top of the remote-controlled bug, set it on a big sheet of paper and they can doodle away without having to stop bouncing off the walls long enough to sit down.

But then it dawns on you that "art surfaces" can and probably will quickly grow to encompass your new white carpet, your leather sofa, and pretty much any other flat surface in your house.

Luckily, it's not launching until September, giving you eight months to gird your loins and coat your entire house in vinyl. Also, given that they are likely to receive a patent on the entire concept "radio-controlled art," expect there to be many more of these things in the works.

The 10 most dangerous play things of all time

"An article at the Radar lists the ten most dangerous toys of all time, those treasured playthings that drew blood, chewed digits, took out eyes, and, in one case, actually irradiated. To keep things interesting, the editors excluded BB guns, slingshots, throwing stars, and anything else actually intended to inflict harm." My favorite: 'Feed Me!' begged the packaging for 1996's Cabbage Patch Snacktime Kid. And much like the carnivorous Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, the adorable lineup of Cabbage Patch snack-dolls appeared at first to be harmless. They merely wanted a nibble--a carrot perhaps, or maybe some yummy pudding. They would stop chewing when snack time was done -- they promised. Then they chomped your child's finger off."

Blog EntryA Geek Family News - UPDATEDNov 3, '06 8:29 PM
for everyone

Last week Andre went to a kid’s camp.

It was half term and would be really hard for me deal with this two boys here, all day long, while doing my interviews by phone. Yes, I’m looking for a job: A flexible job, maybe part time, in a company with nursery.

Am I asking too much? Not really. Here they really think about working mums. Almost all companies have nurseries and some kind of flexible work for mums.

I just did interviews by phone until now, and it was a big challenge for me, I still can’t understand what British people say with their strong accent. Next week, starts my “live” interviews.

Andre really liked this kid’s camp. It was in a big gym in a walking distance from our home.

This week he went for an After School Club. Of course, if I go back to work I have to find a place for him. They left Infant School at 3:30, and “walkers” take the children to the after school club (in fact, this after school club is in another school, Junior School, just behind my fence). It is really funny; these lady walkers use ropes to keep the children together. I will try to take a picture next week to show you.

Today we went to a pub for dinner, and as a Geek Father, Renato said: “Every time I go to a pub I feel like Arthur Dent”. For those who don’t know Arthur Dent, he is a character in the Douglas Adams’ Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Yep… he is geekier than me…and proud of it.

And, as a Geek Kid, Andre will use glasses. Yes, confirmed. He has myopia in his right eye… I just can’t wait to see him with glasses… Of course I will put pictures here. ( False Alarm, he probably will use glasses, but not now. Although, he is in the limit)

Filipe loves mash banana. When I offer him other meals, he always rejects, he just wants mash banana… just like his mum, who loves banana… And, as a Geek Baby, he likes to talk to everyone using instant messages. Ok, probably he doesn’t know what he is typing, but, he loves to type, and he loves computers. In fact, I guess he knows all my passwords, he pay too much attention when I am typing it.

And me, as a Geek Mum, here I am, at 1:30a.m., breastfeeding and blogging…

Have a geek weekend!

Blog EntryThings you can do and learn with your childOct 28, '06 1:47 AM
for everyone

Have children is extremely educational. I realized that my understanding of the world after have kids have been full of new discovers.

When you have kids, you start to see the world completely different.

For example, when you go shopping or out for dinner. First you looked to see clothes, shoes,

nice restaurants and bars, now you are looking for disabled ramps, baby facilities, and kid’s menu.

When you drive, you don’t like high speed anymore. In fact, you drive slowly, so that way, your baby‘ll fell sleep.

Do you think people who make children’s programmes on TV like Telettubies and Barney don’t know what they are doing? Wrong. They really know what they are doing. You can try to put your baby in front a television to watch one of those shows. He’ll eat anything you put near his mouth.

Are you thinking about give a gift to some kid? Maybe you could give a robot, or a remote control car, or the new Barbie doll. Wrong. The best toy they’ve ever had could be a TV’s cardboard box or a plastic spoon.

Ok, maybe you are wondering: So, how can parents have some fun with a 5-years-old and a 5-month-old? With anything. Have small children is the best excuse ever to do everything you wanted to do and couldn’t since you are a grown one:

- play with remote controlled trains

- pretend you are a Jedi

- free your internal child

-

- visit Legoland

- make funny faces

- visit the Zoo

- collect leaves

- bounce for a while

- enjoy a book club

- laugh of yourself

- play kid's games

- sing songs

- get a ride

- cook something

- act a play

- un dust your telescope

- go out for a walk

- talk to the animals

- make funny noises

- enjoy cartoon movies,

- take your time in a toyshop,

- visit a fire station,

- plan a treasure hunt,

- do magic tricks,

- build a fort with sofa’s cushion,

- throw pennies into the fountain and make a wish.

Enjoy yourselves.
