Phone booths in Brazil are popularly called orelhão ("big ear") because of its format.

But, recently people are getting creative and using personalized phone booths around Brazil.

All those pictures were found in the internet and I've tried to keep the copyrights.

Blog EntryOrkut in BrazilApr 4, '07 4:46 PM
for everyone
Do you know Orkut?

No, not that social network, but its creator: Orkut Buyukkokten, 32 years old.

He created the most popular social network in Brazil, and during his visit to the South American country, Orkut realized he is a celebrity there. People recognized him at streets.

But, the fact is that Orkut brings more problems than solutions to Google. The social network, not its creator.

“Social Networks are a reflection of the society” says Orkut. “And you can find good and bad people in society”.

Google had some problems in the past with Brazilians authorities for the successively refusing to hand over user information associated with Orkut. The social network, not its creator.

Orkut has 49,2 million users, 27,5 million in Brazil. And also several problems: Between January and April 2006, SaferNet Brasil (non-governmental organization) received 9.982 denunciations of child pornography in the Internet, 9.100 against Orkut.

But now, Google are developing tools to increase users privacy and improve its communication with Brazilian authorities about crime cases.

Now, Orkut's next step is find a way to monetize his creation and improve its mechanisms, after all, if social networks are a reflection of the society, it need clear rules like all democratic societies.

São Paulo (Portuguese for Saint Paul) is the capital of the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil.

The city has an area of 1,523.0 square kilometres (588.0 sq. miles) and a population of just over 11 million, which makes it the largest and most populous city in the and a global city. Some argue that Sao Paulo is the world's second largest metropolitan area. 16 million people live in the greater São Paulo metropolitan — making it second most populous city in the world.

São Paulo is one of the most important financial centres in Latin America. The city is considered to headquarter more German companies than any other single city outside Germany. São Paulo's GDP is around US$ 260 billion dollars in 2006.

Its financial districts are located on the surroundings of Avenida Paulista and in the Centro Velho (Old Centre). Other important business districts are located in the boroughs of Pinheiros and Santo Amaro, including the large artery Faria Lima.

There are a number of highly specialised regions, like Bom Retiro and Brás (wholesale garment districts), Consolação (lighting equipment), Rua Santa Ifigênia (electrical and electronic parts), Rua Teodoro Sampaio (furniture and musical equipment), the posh Rua Oscar Freire (designer and label stores), Avenida Europa (automobiles) and the crowded Rua Vinte Cinco de Março. São Paulo is also home to a large number of advertising and broadcasting companies.

Rua Oscar Freire is a tree lined street in the Jardins district of São Paulo, stretching from Alameda Casa Branca to Avenida Doutor Arnaldo. It was named after Oscar Freire de Carvalho, a physician and forensic medicine professor from Bahia, who helped developing the city's first morgue (Instituto Médico Legal). It's considered the posh street in Sao Paulo, like Los Angeles's Rodeo Drive of Brazil. The street in located in the Jardins area of the city. Some shops located on Rua Oscar Freire and it's surroundings are worldwide famous Louis Vuitton, Armani, Dior, Versace, Diesel, Cartier, Cavalli, Bulgari, Salvatore Ferragamo and the best of Brazilian fashion - Alexandre Herchcovitch, Forum, Ellus, NK Store, Sergio K, Osklen and many other designers.
Rua Oscar Freire is also called the Brazil's "luxury square" and is one of Latin America's most prominent commercial streets. Recentelly, the street's stores funded a project to remove the obstructing electric poles and install an underground fiber-optic lines instead, in an attempt to make the street more appealing to the shoppers.

São Paulo has significant ethnic diversity in comparison to other major cities:
• 5,000,000 are direct or indirect descendants of Italians. There is a building named Edifício Itália (Italy Building), in honor of the Italians. It was once the tallest building of the city (165m).
• 3,000,000 people are direct or indirect descendants of Portuguese.
• 2,000,000 are direct or indirect descendants of Spaniards.
• 1,500,000 people have direct or indirect African ancestry.
• 1,000,000 people are direct or indirect descendants of Germans.
• 850,000 people are direct or indirect descendants of Lebanese immigrants— by far the largest number of Lebanese outside Lebanon.
• More than 1 million people are direct or indirect descendants of Japanese. São Paulo has the largest number of Japanese outside Japan. The Japanese community's historical centre is the Liberdade neighborhood.
• São Paulo is home to the largest Jewish community in Brazil with about 130,000 people.
• There is a considerable number of immigrants from other countries in Latin America, especially Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Chile.
• Note that many paulistanos have mixed ethnic origins; the numbers above may count individuals belonging to multiple groups.

Other sizable groups are:
• Koreans
• Armenians
• Lithuanian
• Greeks
• Syrians
• Polish

As in the rest of Brazil, Portuguese is the dominant language of the vast majority of the population. However, many other languages, such as German, Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean, are still spoken by first and second-generation members of their respective ethnic communities. Italian (its southern dialects in particular) was once widespread, and though most Italo-Brazilians in the city are no longer fluent in it, typical paulistano Portuguese retains a distinctive Italian cadence.

São Paulo hosts one of the most well known academic institutions in Brazil, the University of São Paulo (USP). A public university maintained by the State of São Paulo, USP is tuition-free to any student who is accepted. It boasts large research programs, as well as being one of the most highly regarded educational centers in the country. Located in the city is the main campus, as well as the medical and law school. Several smaller campuses are located throughout the state.

USP is considered as Brazil's top academic and research institute. In its 2005 edition, The Times Higher Education Supplement considered USP to be the 196th best university institution in the world. According to the 2005 Academic Ranking of World Universities, published by the Shanghai Jiaotong University, USP is placed in the group of the 101-152nd top world universities. The EGI (European Graduate Institute) reported that USP is the 58th best university in the world, according to the 2006's edition.
According to the results of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (Top 200), USP is the best university of the set of countries named BRIC (est. population: 2.7 billion – 07/2006). I studied here, at Physics Institute, or at least, I tried.

As in the rest of Brazil, Soccer is by far the most important sport in the city. The major clubs in São Paulo are São Paulo, Palmeiras and Corinthians. They are all playing in the Brazilian Série A. The fourth most important club of the city is Portuguesa, currently playing in Brazilian Série B. Another popular club in São Paulo is Santos FC from the nearby coastal city of the same name, Santos. There are two other small clubs in the city, Juventus and Nacional.

The best football team ever, the first to win the FIFA World Club Championship, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista is a Brazilian sports club, based on São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, is a traditional and popular Brazilian football club. As of 2004, Corinthians is estimated to have 24 million fans.
Corinthians was founded in 1910 by a group of labourers - mainly of Portuguese, Italian and Spanish descent - hoping to create a popular club in the city of São Paulo to play against the elite clubs that already existed. They are named after the famous English amateur team Corinthians, now Corinthian-Casuals.

Furar o bloqueio do Youtube é fácil e plenamente legal.

Following up on about a court decision in Brazil to "shut down" YouTube over an unathorized celebrity sex video, Bruno Maestrini says:
Brasil Telecom, a popular ISP in Brazil has already banned user access to youtube.com. As far as I know all other ISPs are still normal.

I, as a journalist, have tried to reach Brasil Telecom without any success. The only way I got to talk to them was through customer support, and they told me that the problem was with the company that authenticates my login. That sounds stupid. I have interviewed people from all around Brazil using BrT and none of them could access YouTube, except with a foreign proxy.

Janio Sarmento says,
Here's a story about how ADSL users from BrT are now prevented from accessing YouTube. BrasilTelecom is one of the major phone companies and bandwidth providers, and they just blocked YouTube, without a single word for the customers.

Blog EntryGoogle has bad moments in BrazilAug 25, '06 4:31 PM

By Renata Vincoletto & Renato Golin

Involved in a series of prosecutions, the company can stop its activities in Brazil in case it is not possible to restrain excesses from Brazilian users or if they not get an agreement with the Brazilian Justice.

52 orders had been opened to release user information from Orkut until today. In its majority, they are cases of pedophilia, racism and hate. Between January and April, SaferNet Brasil (non-governmental organization) received 9.982 denunciations of child pornography in the Internet, 9.100 against Orkut.

Google’s resistance in supplying information comes from the fear of political use of the information. As examples, they had cited China and the Iran, which already had requested this kind of information about people considered against the government.

In case they don’t release this information, they will be charged at least U$100.000 daily, as indemnity for the successively refusing to hand over user information associated with Orkut.

Three questions arise from it:

  • First: The way United States faces the third world, as if we couldn't take care of our business on our own.

  • Second: Brazil is far from being like China and Iran, ie. military dictatorships. Brazil is a free country and it's only trying to protect itself from problems that the whole world is facing, including US.

  • Third: Business is business, but in some countries there are limits. Protect customer's privacy is one thing, protect the worst scum of criminals is completely different. Too bad the Google didn't figure out what "freedom" is all about.

Trocadilho infame do locutor ingles antes do jogo:

Gana's gana win!

Eu digo:

Brazil's Gana win - not just this match, but the World Cup!

Dá-lhe gordo!
