Planning
At the beginning of the year we started planning our trip. It had to be a good place for a 3 y. old kid with lot of energy and beautiful for us. Ushuaia was a good choice.
Ushuaia have a unique landscape and lots of things to do for fun like skiing, riding the train "Tren del Fin del Mundo", riding boats along the Beagle channel (yes, the one Charles Darwin went a long time ago) and a hot night with many restaurants, cyber cafes, gift shops and beautiful buildings.
Arriving
When we arrived the cold Antarctic wind announced the temperature. But, instead of a nice and thick snow we saw a plain dirty ground. The snow delayed! We went until the end of the world to see snow (the most probable place to see it, in fact) and it delayed. We were sad.
But, instead of a problem we found a solution. Ushuaia is so deeply beautiful and so impressive with the local unique vegetation and landscape that in a snowy weather we would not be capable of seeing that. We were luck after all.
And, to complete it all, we got some snow at Glaciar Martial and that was enough for three people that had never seen snow at the ground.
The Lakes
On the second day we went to see the lakes Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake) and Lago Fagnano (a name). The Lago Escondido is called that way because most of the time there is a thick cloud covering almost all of its extension and one is capable of crossing the road around the lake without seeing it.
A couple minutes ahead is the Lago Fagnano, a huge lake that have more than 100km of extension and have a portion of it on Chile. An impressive landscape one can see is the Lengas trees (good for buildings) and the Turbal, a different kind of swamp that have black sand and red and yellow grass.
On the journey back we stop for lunch at Lago Escondido in an Inn by the lake. Marvelous place and delicious food.
The Train
The Southeast railroad of the earth, used to transport prisoners of a local maximum security prison (because of the weather conditions and the isolation level Ushuaia had decades ago). Today is only for tourism and it cross the national park of Tierra del Fuego. Lengas, a beautiful river and some wild horses can be seen inside the park.
After that we went to see the end of the route 3 (Ruta 3) that comes from Buenos Aires until the end of the world at Ushuaia, for 3300km (which 3000 of them are in Argentina).
It's time to go
Now, that we had to go the snow came. It was crazy but we took a Remis (kind of taxi) and went to Lago Escondido again because Miguel (on of our guides) called us on the radio saying that there was snow there. We had to run!
Getting there, -15 celsius degrees (5 degrees Fahrenheit) and a nice amount of snow on the ground. It was hard to keep warm and taping but we could throw some snow balls! Good enough!
Running against time, we went 120km per hour to the airport, they were already calling us by our names!! Well, 12 hours between airplanes and airports we got back home!
The Inn, and other places
A special part of this trip was the Inn, Hosteria Los Fuegos. A fantastic place, warm and couch, beautiful and with excellent and lovable service.
The food
The food is delicious but a little grassy because of the cold there they need much calories. I gained 2 kilograms on this trip. The special plates you *must* ask for is Centello (King Crab), Cordero (delicious meet on the "eat what you can" style) and the Trucha (trout).
We missed...
We missed the ski places because of the lack of snow but Cerro Castor was on our plans before knowing there was no snow there. Besides skiing, there's snowmobiles, snow sleds pulled by dogs (huskies) among other snowy things.
We already missed the boat trip along Cape Beagle to see penguins, sea wolves and the southern most lighthouse.
Well, next time maybe...
